Who can apply for the MFC CDT programme?

Candidates with a strong background in mathematics, physics, computer science, or related disciplines. Ideal candidates should have a first-class or strong upper second-class degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field. Candidates must hold a master’s in mathematics (this includes an MMath) or a related field with a strong mathematics content by the start of the PhD programme.

What are the entry requirements for the MFC CDT?

When should I apply?
You can apply to MFC CDT from October each year. We recommend that you apply early as we have limited places available. Keep an eye on our ‘How to Apply‘ page for the announcement when applications open.
Can I apply if I am an international student?
Yes, we welcome applications from international students. Please note that because of the limited funding for international students we advise you to submit the application as we open our recruitment cycle.
What funding is available for the MFC CDT programme?

The MFC CDT offers fully-funded studentships covering:

Stipend: A competitive tax-free stipend.

Fees: Full coverage of tuition fees.

Research Costs: Funding for research-related expenses, including travel and conference attendance.

Can I apply to MFC CDT at more than one institution?
Yes, we encourage applicants to apply to more than one institution for the CDT.
What are the stages of the student selection process?

The MFC CDT aims to recruit students of the highest calibre. Detailed information about the application and selection process is available on the ‘How To Apply’ page.

The selection process involves:

  1. Initial review by the MFC CDT Management Board and an informal interview.
  2. Successful candidates are invited to choose up to three projects from the list of available projects at the institution(s) they applied to.
  3. Final interview with the project supervisors and MFC CDT staff.

Assessments are based on the candidate’s suitability for the CDT programme, research aptitude, academic ability, performance during the interview, scientific aspirations, and feedback from the supervisors they meet.

Which institution will award my PhD?
You will be registered and awarded a PhD by the institution you applied to and were selected by. Please note that CDT students cannot transfer to partner institutions once registered.

Fully Funded Studentships

Study while receiving a full stipend (with London weighting), PhD fees paid for 4 years, and a generous allowance for research-related travel.
