In January, MFC CDT students from the first cohort attended the Residential Graduate Training Workshop for the Mathematical Sciences, hosted at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences (INI) in Cambridge. The workshop was designed to bring research students together to work collaboratively and develop transferable skills in a research-focused environment. The training covered science communication skills, industry engagement and knowledge exchange, EDI and ethics, peer support, and networking, including with some of the Institute’s international academic visitors.
Across the week, students took part in sessions aimed at building practical skills that support PhD research and professional development, alongside time to connect with peers from across the mathematical sciences community. (The full workshop schedule is available via the Newton Gateway event page: Graduate Training Workshop for the Mathematical Sciences – Newton Gateway to Mathematics)
