Nov 19, 2024 | News

We’re thrilled to have officially welcomed our first cohort of 12 students to the MFC CDT Kick-Off Camp, a two-week residential program held from September 9th to 19th, 2024. The camp was all about getting the students up to speed with a great mix of engaging courses, hands-on training, and fun social activities.

Throughout the two weeks, students gained valuable insights from MFC CDT courses, with lectures and training sessions led by experts in their fields. Some key highlights included:

  • Ocean Dynamics by Alberto Naveira Garabato
  • Analysing Ocean Drifter Data in R by Adam Sykulski
  • Python Introduction by Sambit Kumar Panda
  • Intro to Numerical Mathematics by Hilary Weller, University of Reading
  • Data Assimilation by Alison Fowler
  • Changepoint Detection by Euan McGonigle
  • Verification of Weather Forecasts by Barbara Casati
  • Geophysical Fluid Dynamics by Remi Tailleux & Oscar Martinez Alvarado, University of Reading and Alessando Silvano, University of Southampton
  • Intro to Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) by Darryl Holm and Michele Coti-Zelati, Imperial College London
  • Probability and Statistics by Adam Sykulski, Imperial College London

Alongside these courses, the students also attended insightful seminars at the Natural History Museum, enjoyed social events at Parkhouse, and took part in a campus tour, building both academic knowledge and social connections. The camp wrapped up with group presentations, where students showcased their learning from the two weeks.

Here’s to an exciting journey ahead for MFC CDT Staff and Cohort 2024!
